Who we are

Lionel Escaffre

Lionel Escaffre joined Marcon & Associés as a partner in early 2026. He practices in the Principality as legal counsel, registered with the Chambre des Conseils Juridiques de Monaco under Marcon & Associés, and brings to the firm’s transactions more than twenty-five years of work on financial regulation, valuation, and reporting standards.

His practice covers company valuations for business combinations, transfers, and expert witness engagements, together with the regulatory and financial dimension of complex transactions: French, international, and U.S. financial reporting standards, and the governance questions that come with them.

An academic, and a practitioner

He holds a doctorate in management, is a professor at the IAE of the University of Angers, and is habilité à diriger des recherches, the highest French academic qualification, which authorizes the supervision of doctoral candidates.

He founded and directs the Règles et Marchés research chair at GRANEM, devoted to financial regulation.

It is also why he chose to practice in Monaco rather than remain purely academic: in his view, there is no such thing as a good professor without a practice. Teaching and practice feed each other, or neither is worth much.

In Monaco

Affiliate Professor at the International University of Monaco, Department of Economics and Finance, where he teaches accounting and financial standards (IFRS, Basel III, Solvency II), financial regulation in complex transactions, and financial information and market behavior.

He sits on the teaching committee of the compliance certificate run by the university with the Association Monégasque des Compliance Officers, alongside Richard Marcon. Neither partner uses that classroom to sell a service, and the rule is stated to every cohort at the start of the course.

Research

Author of books on IAS and IFRS standards and of articles in academic and professional journals. His current work includes blockchain and law, the relevance of accounting and non-accounting information, and fair value measurement.

Governance, beyond compliance

Both partners are working on a project for what would be the first Monegasque university chair on governance. The premise is simple: governance is routinely reduced to anti-money laundering, and it is a great deal wider than that. How a company is organized, how it is controlled, and how it accounts for itself is a matter of value long before it becomes a matter of regulation.
